This book tells the history of the INRIA – French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automatic Control - Research areas include parallel and distributed computing, software safety and reliability, multimedia, analysis, and process simulation. The Institute is celebrating its fortieth anniversary. The book that was written by historians and serves as a witness to an extraordinary adventure, when the objective was to form a group of French researchers from scratch in a fledgling discipline which then proved to be at the origin of a technological, economical, political and social revolution. This history bears witness to the whole research project in computer science with its obstacles, challenges, rivalries, its errors and its achievements.
